“Niche down & work with the fun, trendy, exciting industries,” they said. Who are “they” anyway? Listen up, cause I'm about to have a soapbox moment. 😂 I believe to my core is that EVERY business and brand deserves quality and strategic branding regardless of how “glamorous” their industry is. Surely, I'm not the only solopreneur who feels AWKWARD in front of a camera!! I decided to write about my photoshoot with @ashleybrookecollective in my most recent blog post. When I first started working as a brand designer nearly 16 years ago, I learned one thing very quickly: people are CONFUSED about what a brand actually is. This honestly didn’t come as a shock to me though because as a business owner myself I can clearly see why this confusion happens. When you’re starting out in business, you tend to hear similar advice of what you need to do first. Create your logo. Build your website. Choose your colors. Have a brand photoshoot… so you can post cute pics on Instagram for “marketing.” No wonder people think that a brand is simply a logo and a color palette! That’s what people are teaching them. As a brand designer, this makes me cringe because your brand is SO. MUCH. MORE. And it’s really freaking important! If you can relate to thinking that your brand is: ✔️ simply about the logo in the corner of your website ✔️ the colors that you use on your Instagram highlight covers and CTA buttons ✔️ or the fonts that you use on your website and social media posts Your brand as a whole is the overarching entity that people recognize and identify you with – and it’s not a tangible product or service. Instead, it’s a mixture of visuals and feelings working together to create an experience with every touchpoint of your business to impact the perception that people have of you and your business. This means that your brand is NOT just your logo, color palette and fonts. Guilty as charged…😬 but let’s slow down for a sec. There’s a better way in Canva Pro that saves time, keeps things organized, on-brand and consistent. BRAND TEMPLATES You can save files you use over and over by using the “publish as brand template” feature. In this case I’m saving a pinterest Title template. Now each time I’m ready to create a title pin graphic, I just hit the create a design button on Canva’s homepage and search the word pin to create a new document. Navigate to the brand kit icon on the left Click “See All” in the Brand Templates section. You can type the word pin on the search bar to see all the different pin designs you’ve saved. Click the page from the document that you want to edit for your new design. Whether it's leading your visitor through a journey, making a purchase or signing up for a newsletter, if you don't ask visitors likely won't take action without being promoted. If you don't have a call to action on your website, this is one of the simplest things you can add right now. All you need is one per page. Short on ideas? Here are a few creative examples you can choose from. I’m not big on hot-take marketing, but I think it’s finally time I share… 🔥 There are some really boring brands out there. And there are also a LOT of brands that look the same. And if you were to scroll your Instagram feed, you’d probably start to see what I mean and agree… And honestly, I get it. In a world filled with trends, it’s easy to morph into what you think people are attracted to. If Pantone claims the color of the year is Magenta, you might think you need to start using more magenta in your brand. It’s like when TikTok told the girlies back in January that fur coats are back in… what did everyone do? Stock up on their fur coats they swore they’d never buy again. 🤦🏼♀️ See what I mean? Because of the trendy world we’re so easily influenced by, it can be hard to create a stand out brand that’s unique and meaningful to YOU. You might be inspired by design from one brand and then influenced by color from another and it makes it nearly impossible to create something that accurately represents you in the market. None of this necessarily means the brand isn’t successful or that they don’t generate results, but from the outside looking in and as someone who does competitive research as part of brand strategy, brands have the potential to stand out but aren’t tapping into it, which means loss of attraction and sales. Ouch!! This is where working with a professional brand designer can come in handy. Brand designer a helps you ditch the trends of what everyone else is doing and hone in on specific brand aspects that make sense for you, depict who you really are, and help you effectively stand out in your industry, from your brand strategy and design. The other day, I went into a local biz for a pickup I had ordered online. A gal working there (an acquaintance) greeted me with a smile and asked how I was doing because I had seen this person several times. I knew this person's name, so I naturally thought she would know mine. I told her I had a pickup and expected her to go grab mine out of her pile, but instead, she walked over to the pickups and asked, "What's your name?" I was taken aback. Did she not know who I was? 😂 😂 😂 I mean, I know I'm not special but I really thought this person knew who I was. We've all been there. We all have moments of panic when we think we should know someone's name but get put on the spot and can't think of it, am I right? I also know that some people are terrible with names, and I am one of them. Do I fault this person for not knowing my name? NO! She sees tons of people in a day. Here are some starter questions to ask yourself when creating goals… 〰️Where are you now for [insert category] and where do you want to be? 〰️Based on your answer above, what do you need to do for [insert category] to reach that desired destination? 〰️Who do you want to be? 〰️What experience do you want to have? 〰️What does your ideal work day/week look like? 〰️What are the things in your life currently that bring you the most joy? 〰️What are the things in your life currently that bring you the most frustration? 〰️How do you want to feel when you wake up in the morning and put your head on your pillow at night? 〰️How do you want your friends and family to describe you? 〰️What can you do/change so that they do describe you that way? 〰️How do you want people that don’t know you to perceive you? Those 10 questions can get the ball rolling for bringing your vision board to life. Once you have your generalized goals written, go back and make them specific by adding numbers, deadlines, etc. For example, if your general goal this year is to “make more money” you can make that specific by saying, “I want to make $5,000/month and in order to do that I need to sell 5 spots for my course each month.” See the difference? What to use instead of LinkTree or multiple links in your Instagram bio? Short answer: use your website. But make it strategic! 👋It’s me, Amanda, your Brand & Website designer at @studioa_designs. I'm excited to share the finishing touches on a new law firm deluxe package. This client chose two add-ons to the already robust brand and website strategy and design package….1) brand naming and 2) brand photography. Six attorneys sat in a room with me for 3 hours straight and we talked/strategized about their hopes, dreams and goals as these two prestigious law firms joined forces. They expressed the importance of being a law firm who cares about their clients and is also firmly grounded in legal expertise and professionalism. I'm telling you, it was an absolute blast! Each of them had something unique to bring to the conversation through the worksheets and exercises. It brought up things they hadn't previously discussed or even thought about. There are several reasons for biz’s needing a rebrand but they nailed it by contacting me at just the right time to launch things when they merged into one firm. I'm very proud of them for choosing a refined, modern feel for the next era. In my stories, I mentioned I spent all day working on this reel. When I first heard this advice as a branding and website design service provider, I thought, “hmmmm, I’m not so sure that’s something I want to do.” So I didn’t. This is an unpopular choice and very rarely advised by brand experts, but after putting much thought into the idea of niching down my client base and limiting myself to a certain industry, I ultimately decided it’s not how I wanted to run my business. Website button text seems so minuscule, but a button call to action, often abbreviated as CTA, simply prompts the user to take ONE next action. When created strategically, it’s the thing that will move someone along in your website visitor’s journey. CTA’s you are used to seeing come in the form of “subscribe now,” or “follow for more” or the cta I refuse to use when I design client websites...”LEARN MORE” The key with CTA’s is clarity so the person knows exactly what step they are taking. It’s ok to make button words cute and fun, as long as it's clear and doesn't cause confusion for the user which can lead to no decision at all. I find the words “LEARN MORE” to be mostly unhelpful in getting someones attention. It's generic, unoriginal, and doesn't convert. We all have a set of industry terms and phrases we regularly use that the rest of the world can't really relate to. But the thing about becoming a business owner of any kind (regardless of your industry) is that you find yourself in a new world that throws a lot of the same language around. And graphic design and branding terms usually fall into that. Everyone needs branding and a website, so you'll likely find yourself in a conversation with vendors/designers that says something like, “do you have a set of brand guidelines?” or “do you have a vector file of your logo?” and you might be left looking at them like 🤔 And while it's definitely not your responsibility to know what all of these things mean, it can be helpful to have a deeper understanding of these terms so you can easily communicate with your designer and be able to specifically ask for what you need.
